
Following our exploration into the note names of western music, this lesson shows you how those notes relate to the guitar fretboard. The first example shows the natural notes and secondly incorporates the relative sharps (#) and Flats (b).

Remember that a note is referred to as sharp if referenced from the natural note previous (lower) to it in pitch, and a flat is referenced from the natural note higher in pitch. For example the F# is positioned on fret 2, after the natural F note. Also remember that # & b are one in the same. For example, the note F# can also be called a Gb. While you’re familiarising yourself with this idea always try to refer to the same note with both names. I.E. F sharp/G flat (Fret 2), G sharp/A flat (Fret 4) ect.
